The best boutique hotels in Amsterdam

Advice

All hotels have been independently reviewed and selected. We will earn a commission if you book via the links below, but this never affects our rating.

Amsterdam is a city of rich helpings in small portions. Past glories, present pizazz and an effervescent spirit come packed into rows of gabled houses, on crisscrossing canals, at a walkable (or cyclable) scale. A boutique hotel fits right in with the mood, and Amsterdam offers some gems – jewels that sparkle individually with the city’s varied facets: its history, the hipness, the inventive zaniness that it’s famous for.

An intimate boutique hotel takes you straight to the essence of Amsterdam. You’ll find places replete with fine antiques, or showing off a young designer’s dream; cosy pads with a friendly, domestic atmosphere, and quirky paeans to an eccentric idea (plus a tweak of dry humour). They may come with a story to tell, be squeezed in shoulder-to-shoulder with others along a canal, or – in one case – spread out in bridge houses all across town. Here’s our pick of the best boutique hotels in Amsterdam.

How we review

Every hotel in this curated list has been visited by one of our expert reviewers, who are usually hosted on a complimentary basis. They stay for a minimum of one night, test at least one meal and trial other experiences that the hotel might have to offer.

Sweets

Amsterdam, Netherlands

9
Telegraph expert rating

Not your conventional hotel, Sweets is a collection of bridge operator cabins on bridges across town. Varying in architectural style, these small houses date back as far as the 17th century or as recently as the early 2000s. They’ve all been converted into hotel suites making optimum use of the compact space and referencing the periods they originate from in their design. Owing to their locations, each one has a canal view on each side. While there aren’t any hotel facilities, like a restaurant and bar, the in-room tablets come with a guide to where to eat and drink and find other conveniences in the area.
