Advice

Please note our writers visited the following hotels prior to the coronavirus pandemic

Grenada is heaven for families. Its soft, white-sand beaches are among the best in the Caribbean and the snorkelling is excellent – there’s even an underwater sculpture park to explore. You can go hiking in the rainforest, swim underneath waterfalls, and enjoy tastings in quaint chocolate factories. In terms of where to stay, Grenada has a number of hotels with apartments and villas whose space and layout suit families perfectly, as well as more conventional family-friendly, beachfront, resort-style properties. Here’s our pick of the best family-friendly hotels in Grenada.

Mount Cinnamon

Grand Anse, St George’s, Grenada

8
Telegraph expert rating

Plenty of families stay at Mount Cinnamon. Set above Grand Anse, Grenada’s best beach, the style is colourful and trendy-looking, and accommodation comes in the form of spacious and well-equipped suites, apartments and villas, which make them ideal for adults and children. A key selling point of Mount Cinnamon is its Beach Cabana, a stylish beach club with a well-maintained croquet lawn, volleyball court, yoga platform, and kayaks, paddle boards, sailboats and snorkelling equipment. Babysitters can be arranged, and Savvy’s restaurant – relaxed and fairly low-key – has a children’s menu.

Spice Island Beach Resort

St George’s, Grenada

9
Telegraph expert rating

Spice Island Beach Resort is set along the beautiful sands of Grand Anse and is as much popular with families as it is with elderly couples – so a good option for intergenerational holidays. The sea is great for safe swimming with children, and the hotel has a supervised children’s club, open 9am-5pm daily, for three to 12 year-olds. The bedrooms are gorgeous, service is first rate, the food good (with casual or fine dining options) and the facilities attractive. Note that children attending the kids’ club are kept indoors, and children under five are not allowed in the main restaurant for dinner.

In a pleasant spot on the south coast, this is a fun, informal and vibrantly designed waterfront hotel. Expansive rooms include the vast Tower Suites, which have their own lookout tower, and the spilt-level Waterfront Suites. There are also five big two-bedroom villas with vast living rooms, swanky kitchens and private plunge pools – these in particular are great for families. Children under 12 stay for free when in their parents’ room, and there’s a play area, a lively bar and restaurant on a deck projecting out over the water and several appealing swimming pools. The place feels loved and spirited.

Lance aux Épines Cottages

St George’s, Grenada

7
Telegraph expert rating

This friendly, well-run collection of self-catering apartments and cottages is a great choice for families seeking a more affordable option. The apartments are all furnished in a plain, somewhat old-fashioned style, but they are homely (stocked with lots of books), have loads of space including a big living area, and come with a fully-equipped kitchen. While rates for the larger cottages are significantly more, they are still a good deal. Each has its own picnic table, parasol, hammock and sun loungers, while the apartments share these facilities. There is no pool but the bay is almost always good for safe swimming.

Maca Bana

St George’s, Grenada

8
Telegraph expert rating

On the south-west corner of the island, these individual, tree-house-like villas sit on a hillside high above a long and beautiful beach, with superlative views out to sea and up the coast. It’s a place most suited to independent-minded families with older children as most villas have a sheer drop from their terraces. The two-bedroom villas can sleep a family of four comfortably, and have their own washing machine. The set-up offers self-catering comforts along with hotel-style services, including meals down at Aquarium, Maca Bana’s sister beachfront restaurant.

This is a resort that has space to breathe. On one side lies a two-mile long sweep of well-kept sands with calm waters and a relaxed ambience. 473 Grenada Boutique Resort

Saint George, Grenada

7
Telegraph expert rating

Taking its name from Grenada’s telephone area code, 473 is hidden away in the affluent, residential Fort Jeudy community, which occupies one of the long fingers of land on Grenada’s south coast. The eight cream-coloured, shingle-roofed villas are snuggled within two acres of pristine gardens and the place feels smart, but at the same time a low-key, homely atmosphere prevails. Most of the villas have two or three bedrooms, so can accommodate families very comfortably. The sole communal area is the pleasant infinity-edge swimming pool, which has views out to sea.
