Expert guide to Passo Tonale
Three-star hotels that vary greatly in degree of comfort make up the bulk of the accommodation in Passo Tonale, and there are a few four-stars. Most hotels are located on the main road through the resort, and quite convenient for the lifts, however some are quite a way from most of the shops and bars. Apartments are available too, on a road that runs parallel to the main road.
The other option is to stay in the more traditional resort of Ponte di Legno, which shares the Ponte di Legno-Tonale ski area with Passo Tonale.
Few UK tour operators serve either Passo Tonale and Ponte di Legno, but packages are also available through ski specialist agents.
Hotels
Grand Hotel Paradiso
On the edge of town near the nursery slopes and the return gondola from Ponte di Legno, Grand Hotel Paradiso is exclusive to Crystal for the winter season, except for two suites. It has 123 rooms and a spacious, modern style with big windows and modern furnishings. Dinners are buffet-style with free wine and soft drinks, with the option of à la carte in the Pasta and Pizza restaurant once a week. As well as the hotel bar, the hotel runs an umbrella bar on the slopes outside, next to the lifts. The wellness area is adults only, and there’s a charge. It has an indoor pool and hot tub, two saunas at different heats and a steam room.

Sporthotel Vittoria
The central, family-run four-star Sporthotel Vittoria is close to the lifts in Passo Tonale. Decor is light and airy with lots of use of pine and light wood, and as well as an adult pool with a waterfall and a children’s pool with a water slide, there’s a wellness area for adults only. This has a sauna, steam room, Roman bath (cooler than a sauna and less humid than a steam room), ice cave and an outdoor sauna, along with a salt cave. It’s very family-friendly, with all day child care and babysitting available.

La Mirandola
A former monastery now beautifully converted into a three-star hotel, La Mirandola has kept lots of its original features, from the original chapel to the vaulted ceilings in the dining room and in the piano bar. It’s out of town on the slopes and an easy walk or slide to and from a piste – or there’s a mini-bus service to and from town and lifts. The food has a good reputation and there’s a smart spa with sauna, steam room and hot tub.
Price: From £804 with Crystal Ski.
La Toretta
Rated by many as the best hotel in Passo Tonale, despite only having a three-star Superior official rating, La Toretta is central, right on the slopes and right by the lifts. It could not be more convenient but, strangely, no UK tour operators offer it. It has 39 large and comfortable rooms with modern Alpine decor, using lots of wood. Good food includes classic Italian dishes and local specialities. The spa area includes four types of sauna, an outdoor hot tub with great mountain views, an ice waterfall and tropical rain experience showers.
