First Look: A Dreamy New Boutique Hotel In The Heart Of Cape Town

Food & Drink

Follow the antique balustrade that guides you to reception on the mezzanine level where a classic fireplace, original chandelier and plush velvet armchairs awaits. This is LABOTESSA, a brand new luxury boutique hotel that opened in the heart of Cape Town earlier this month and is now accepting reservations.

Formerly a 17th-century congressional church turned lifestyle hotel, LABOTESSA is the love child of South Africa natives and childhood friends Johan Du Plessis and Jan Fourie. With six signature suites and a Governors Suite in the heart of Cape Town’s historic center, the property was meticulously designed by the duo and each room offers private elevator access, works by local artists and antique pieces as well as a Juliet balcony and sweeping views of Lion’s Head and Table Mountain in the distance.

Joining the ranks of notable luxury outposts in Cape Town including The Silo, One & Only and Ellerman House, LABOTESSA is a passion project and the first hotel planned for Plessis and Fourie that was born out their desire to meld heritage and old-world elegance with visionary new world design.

“We are delighted to begin our foray into hotel ownership with one of South Africa’s oldest buildings, which has been a true testament to the country’s rich history and heritage,” Johan du Plessis, LABOTESSA Founder and Owner said. “LABOTESSA is a culmination of our affinity for exceptional design, relaxed hospitality, and our connection to the city of Cape Town.”

In addition to its location in Cape Town’s historical center, one of the most unique offerings of the property is the expansive Governor Suite. Set on the top floor, the three bedroom space named after Dutch settler and the first governor of the Cape Simon Van der Stel, the suite measures in at 3,230 square-feet and spans across two floors with breathtaking views of Church Square, Signal Hill, and Table Mountain. A completely new addition to the original facade, the Governors suite also features distinctly modern touches that include a floating staircase and private plunge pool that overlook the balcony’s glass walls.

Back on the ground floor, the first city outcrop of beloved local restaurant Starling’s offers organic and ethically sourced ingredients as well as an all-day breakfast that includes menu items like aloo tikka and poached eggs over spiced Indian potato pancakes as well as lunch wraps, sandwiches and drinks. Finally The Boutique at LABOTESSA sells high-end products including Diptyque, the signature product of the hotel, along with Dr. Vranjaes, Comme des Garcons, Vilhelm and L’Artisan Parfumeur.

Rates will start at $340 USD per night for the signature suites and $2,508 for the Governor Suite.
