Advice

These are unusual times, and the state of affairs can change quickly. Please check the latest travel guidance before making your journey. Our writers visited these hotels pre-pandemic.

Although renowned as a family destination, Tenerife also has its fair share of child-free accommodation. If you’re looking for the best adults-only hotels in Tenerife, our pick of the bunch will provide peace and calm in place of kids’ clubs pandemonium, refined dining over mealtime melees, and calm waters rather than inflatable-infested pools. Yes, family holidays have their place, but in today’s stressed world, a little ‘me-time for the more mature’ is just as important.

Royal Hideaway Corales Beach

La Caleta, Tenerife, Spain

8
Telegraph expert rating

This sleek, all-suite choice for grown-ups mixes modern sophistication with a slothful vibe in a property that looks like an ocean liner. It’s located at the back of sleepy La Caleta village, and is the adults-only section of Barcelo’s chic Corales Resort. The hotel pretty much covers all you could hope for, with a choice of dining options, drinking holes and outdoor pools – including one on the rooftop – as well as a spa, 24-hour gym, daily programme of fitness activities, sunken deck areas and the ubiquitous Canarian landscaping of black volcanic cinders dotted with palm trees, ferns and cacti. Spacious suites feature big beds, floor-to-ceiling ocean panoramas and free-standing bathtubs.

There’s only a clutch of luxury hotels with near-perfect settings on Tenerife, and this is one of them. Offering direct access to the promenade behind Playa del Duque, one of the finest beaches in the south, the upscale venue ticks many holiday boxes. All rooms are suites, with four-poster beds and soft, billowing drapes, and the magnificent lagoon-sized pool laps the terraces of three bars and restaurants. An exclusive VIP rooftop area contains a separate pool and spacious terraces dotted with Balinese-style beds and shaded sun-loungers. And as you’d expect from such a top-shelf venue, there’s 1,000 square metres dedicated to spa pampering and self-indulgence.

Red Level Gran Meliá Palacio de Isora

Alcala, Spain

9
Telegraph expert rating

An adults-only hotel within a hotel, Red Level takes five-star luxury up an exclusivity notch. It’s alongside the manicured sands of Playa Jaquita at the western end of Alcalá. The hotel’s reception and lobby eschews showy in favour of glass-and-chrome chic with leather seating and exposed-brick walls showcasing contemporary art. Service is of the no-need-to-lift-a-finger school, with every need anticipated and met. In the rooms, ochre, olive green and earth tones set the colour palette in a design concept that blends hints of Asia with art-house style. Essential little extras include valet parking, round-the-clock butler service and a swimming pool concierge.

Hotel San Roque offers impeccable style that brings history and tradition together in a characterful 18th-century manor house in one of the island’s prettiest villages. It is one of the best hotels on the island and makes for a wonderful, romantic, adults-only holiday in Tenerife. Hotel Las Madrigueras

Tenerife, Spain

8
Telegraph expert rating

Overlooking the fourth fairway of its own championship Golf Las Americas course, this conservative hotel sits amidst a clutch of apartment hotels out of earshot and sightline of South Tenerife’s thrumming resort life. Almost all the guests pack irons and wedges and come for the quaint air of formality and consummate tranquillity enforced through bans on dinnertime mobile phones, poolside inflatables and anyone younger than 16. When not riding buggies around the greens, days are spent by the outdoor pool listening to the spill of a stone fountain and the tweeting of birds under the shade of jacaranda and palm trees. Or at the cosy spa.

Colón Guanahaní

Tenerife, Spain

7
Telegraph expert rating

This serene oasis, surrounded by a plethora of shops and restaurants in Costa Adeje’s commercial zone, is popular with the senior set. Two heated outdoor pools provide the main focus for daytime (in)activity, while a tree-lined courtyard is the meeting place for evening socials. There’s a little bit of everything when it comes to architecture: random Roman pillars dot the pool area, colonial-style curves arch over restaurant windows and contemporary accents adorn the facade. And there’s definitely a certain grace about the hotel, imbued in occasional nods to the classic furnishings, and the hushed tones of both guests and staff. It would seem there are many regulars here.

A rural spa hotel in a spectacular pine forest setting on the edge of Teide National Park. Built in traditional Canarian style around an inner courtyard, eye-catching, contemporary design marries wood, glass and stone to create rustic chic. In the expansive, conservatory lobby, a sweeping staircase leads to wooden walkways beneath a Mudéjar style ceiling from which an immense steel and glass chandelier hangs. The generously sized rooms have hardwood floors, spacious en-suites featuring Victorian fittings and tiles, and large balconies overlooking the gardens and pine forest.

Arona Gran Hotel

Tenerife, Spain

8
Telegraph expert rating

A perennially popular, adults-only, spa hotel set at the southern edge of Los Cristianos with nightly sunsets over the neighbouring island of La Gomera. The Arona Gran fuses contemporary luxury with subtropical verdure, a blend that works surprisingly well. A chic, black and chrome piano bar sits alongside the cavernous, marble-columned lobby where giant ferns spill from four floors of tiered balconies surrounding pendulous crystal chandeliers.
Uncluttered elegance and soft, muted earth tones provide a tranquil and restful space in the rooms where the emphasis is on quality of materials. Every room has a terrace or balcony with partial or full sea view.

Iberostar Sábila

Costa Adeje, Spain

7
Telegraph expert rating

The Iberostar Sábila, slotted between shops, bars, restaurants and neighbouring hotels, next to Torviscas Beach, is one of the best adults-only hotels in the Costa Adeje for those who prefer an upscale base right in the thick of it rather than in secluded isolation. Though facilities are few, there are two outdoor pools, a spa, and a cool market-style restaurant with live music and a buzzing vibe. The bright and breezy rooms feature street or ocean views; it’s worth the extra money to opt for one with an Atlantic panorama. Or, upgrade to top-floor Star Prestige rooms for a private check in, and an exclusive rooftop area with a bar, outdoor pool, and free drinks and snacks. The level of service teeters between four and five-star.
