Travel news latest: Malta and Madeira set to be added to green list

Advice

Malta and the Portuguese island of Madeira are set to be added to the green list today, as the Government is expected to continue its cautious approach to resuming overseas holidays.

Spain’s Balearic Islands, including Majorca and Ibiza, and some Caribbean islands could also be opened up for quarantine-free travel, but there will be no major European mainland additions.

The Government is also expected to confirm plans to ease restrictions for fully-vaccinated Britons from the end of July, with those who have had two jabs able to return from amber list countries without the need to quarantine.

Some tour operators, including British Airways Holidays, said they had seen a rise in search interest this week ahead of the announcement, but others have warned this is the Government’s last chance to save the summer.

Michael Edwards, managing director of Explore, said: “If the government isn’t able to relax restrictions for double-vaccinated travellers or put more destinations on the green list in the next few weeks, our August trips will need to be cancelled and customers refunded. This will be yet another blow for British holidaymakers.”
