France is the latest country to impose tighter restrictions on UK travellers due to the Indian variant, putting summer holiday hopes at risk.
Anyone travelling to France from the UK will be subject to seven days of self-isolation and required to present evidence of a negative PCR test taken within 48 hours of their departure.
French government spokesman Gabriel Attal said the new measure will be similar to limits imposed in Germany on people travelling from the UK. Germany barred UK travellers except for citizens or residents from midnight on May 23 while Austria has banned direct flights from the UK.
Most of Europe is on the amber list, but there were hopes more countries could go green in the next review on June 7: these restrictions threaten to further limit holiday options this summer.
A spokesperson for Brittany Ferries said: “The unwelcome move by France to tighten travel restrictions is a direct consequence of the failure of the UK to put India on the red list immediately following the emergence of the terrible and urgent health crisis unfolding in India.”

Victoria prepares for new lockdown
The Australian state of Victoria is preparing to start a one-week lockdown due to a rise in cases of Covid-19. The number of cases reported increased to 34 after 12 new cases overnight.
From 11.59pm on Thursday local time until 3 June, the state’s seven million residents will be told to stay at home except for essential work, healthcare, grocery shopping and exercise.
