The best hotels in Wengen for a winter escape in the stunning Swiss mountains

Advice

The majority of visitors to Wengen stay in hotels, mostly three- and four-star and varying a lot in character. The main street is by far the most convenient place to stay – some accommodation, including most of the rental apartments, is up or down steep hills from the centre and the lifts.

If splendid isolation in the evenings is not off putting, there are a couple of comfortable places to stay up the mountain – Hotel Jungfrau at Wengernalp and Hotel Bellevue des Alpes at Kleine Scheidegg.

Hotel Bernerhof

In a fabulous position in the middle of the main street, near the cable car and a three-minute walk to the station, the Bernerhof was built in traditional chalet style in 1908. As one of the oldest hotels in the resort rooms are fairly basic but its location can’t be beaten.

Hotel Falken

Up a short hill from the station and main street, the three-star Victorian-style Falken was built in 1895, and has been run by successive generations of the von Allmen-Cova family ever since. A member of the Swiss Historic Hotels group, it is furnished and decorated in traditional fashion throughout. With its wood floor, chandeliers and furniture dating back to the early days of the hotel, the dining room is like stepping back into the 19th century.

Maya Caprice Hotel

Built in traditional chalet style in 1989, the four-star Maya Caprice is a 20-room boutique hotel and a member of the Small Luxury Hotels group. It is very close to the station and main street and it’s possible to ski back to within a few metres of the front door. The decor is smart and modern with lots of use of wood. Most rooms have wonderful views including the Jungfrau, and the restaurant serves delicious food. There’s a sauna.

Arenas Resort Victoria-Lauberhorn

Built in 1897, the three-star Arenas Resort Victoria-Lauberhorn, on the main street, looks traditional from the outside but is ultra-modern with bright colours and contemporary furnishings inside. Of the 120 rooms, some have views over the valley and to the Jungfrau – the best are the Panoramic Superior doubles. The highlight is the wellness area with a saltwater pool, sauna and steam room, and panoramic views from the relaxation area.

Beausite Park Hotel

Long regarded as the best hotel in Wengen, the four-star superior Beausite Park sits at the top of the village nursery slope (a steepish walk) and has fabulous views over Wengen and to the Jungfrau; the south-facing rooms make the most of them. The 42 bedrooms and public areas are furnished in modern style and the five-course dinners served in the aptly named Panorama restaurant are highly rated. The wellness area includes an indoor pool, a hot tub, three types of sauna, a steam room and a gym.
