British visitors to Australia should spend more time indoors, authorities have warned, as the country is gripped by record-breaking temperatures and devastating bush fires.

Sydney, which attracts more than four million international visitors a year, has been cloaked in a haze of smoke from scores of nearby bush fires, prompting the New South Wales ambulance service to issue advice urging residents to avoid exercise and find respite in “air conditioned venues like cinemas, shopping centres and libraries”.

Air quality monitoring in the region on the south-east coast – Australia’s most populous – revealed “hazardous” levels of harmful particles across Sydney. A state of emergency has been declared…
