Say “flight-free trip”, and your mind will probably jump to the delicate architecture of Paris or the foodie delights of Brussels. Such city breaks are as easy as pie – or should that be waffles – thanks to a growing roster of direct trains and ferries to some of Europe’s best urban destinations, with Amsterdam being added to Eurostar’s portfolio only last year.

But flight-free travel shouldn’t only lead to an urban environment. A whole world of charming towns and lush landscapes awaits, even without visiting an airport.

As more people pledge to give up – or at the very least reduce – the number of flights they take, it’s heartening to know that wild terrain and hidden coastal towns are still…
