Some say it was to soften the blow of their move to Bath in 1801 that Jane Austen’s parents committed to an annual holiday by the sea. So began a series of summertime sojourns that left the author with an enduring love for the British coast, and plenty of inspiration for her writing – not least her final, unfinished novel Sanditon, about an up-and-coming bathing spot on the south coast.
