Five creative ways to spend £1,000 on your next holiday

Advice

You’ve got itchy feet and £1,000 to burn. Here are five very different ways to do it…

1. Escape to New York

Time tends to be of the essence when you are seeking a bargain break. You certainly need to act fast in the case of the current sale by Expedia (020 3564 0868; expedia.co.uk).

Offers include 30 per cent off selected hotels in New York – which would allow for a full week’s stay at the three-star Days Hotel on Broadway, flying direct from Heathrow to JFK with British Airways on Oct 23, from £977 per person (including hold luggage). Date of travel must be before October 31.

2. Morocco in good company

One reason to consider a group tour is that such holidays have precise dates – and operators often reduce the cost of unsold places as departure day approaches. Such is the case with the regular Highlights of Morocco break offered by Explore (01252 883505; explore.co.uk) – a nine-day affair that includes Marrakech, Fes and the Atlas Mountains.

The trip scheduled for Sept 14 has been discounted to £890 per person, with flights. If that is too imminent to be feasible, you could always wait for the October 5 departure, available at £999 a head.

3. Corfu in October

You can still find summer weather in Europe in October – by visiting Greece as autumn takes hold elsewhere. One deal currently being promoted by Inspiring Travel Company (01244 435252; inspiringtravelcompany.co.uk) will let you do just that, with a fair element of comfort, for a sub-four-digit amount.

The offer involves a 30 per cent discount on a week at the five-star Domes Miramare resort on Corfu. Prices start at £985 a head, including flights and breakfast (book by October 3, travel by October 14).

4. The Canaries in December

The Canary Islands are generally seen as a reliably cheap option for near-at-hand winter sun. But you can also fly to Tenerife and spend a reassuringly weighty figure on luxury. A case in point is a seven-night getaway to the five-star Hotel Jardines de Nivaria, on the south-westerly Costa Adeje – yours for £994 per person (with breakfast and transfers), flying from Gatwick on December 6, through Sovereign (01293 839151; sovereign.com).

5. Norway in January

You can also book now to experience the Norwegian winter. Wexas (020 7454 2901; wexas.com) is offering a £100-a-head “early booking” saving on a four-day Tromso Ice Dome Break – which includes one night at this frozen hotel near the Arctic city, plus snowshoe and husky tours.

All this can be had for a starting cost of £995 a head, including flights, but you will need to book by Aug 31 to travel between December 20 and March 31.
