My honeymoon began with a park ranger demonstrating how to use anti-bear spray. My new wife mocked me with her eyes as I paid unflinching attention to how long to wait before unleashing the potent pepper spray-like cloud at my grizzly assailant (“When the bear is a car’s length from you”). I gulped and reached for my wallet.

“That’s $50,” the ranger said, after giving me a practice go on her dummy gun. “But it comes with a free holster.”

“I’ll take it,” I said, steadying myself against the geotectonic shift caused by my wife’s eye roll.
