The Kempinski offers complimentary, private boat shuttles every 30 minutes between San Clemente Island and Piazza San Marco. Boats are warm and comfortable, with cushy seats – you won’t get any sea spray in your face unless you want it. Climb the few steps from the main cabin areas and join the captain for the best views.

The shuttle trip takes 10 to 15 minutes, but regardless of the direction you’re headed, you might find yourself wishing it took a bit longer. As you get closer to San Clemente Island, the 12th-century church makes itself known, setting a lasting first impression for your stay.

San Clemente Island was founded in 1131, serving as a starting point for religious pilgrims. The Church of San Clemente is open during the day and hotel guests are encouraged to visit. Beautifully restored, the hotel property is comprised of a series of buildings that were once a former monastery. Hotel staff offer a daily island tour designed to help guests get familiar with the property and understand its history.

The hotel has 190 rooms and suites with views ranging from Venice and the lagoon to gardens and inner courtyards. Silk-lined walls, Murano chandeliers, soaking tubs, nap-inducing beds and walk-in showers make simply staying put a good way to enjoy island living. Tall ceilings and big, wide hallways are reminiscent of what it might be like to live in a castle.

Relax – or break a sweat

If you’re the type that doesn’t like to sit still, you’ll find plenty of ways to fill your days. From approximately the beginning of May until the end of September, the heated outdoor pool is the place to soak up some sun and make a splash.
The nearly one-mile jogging path is nice to run or walk any time of day. (Staff coordinate a Sunset Healthy Running activity three days a week at 7 pm.) In addition to an asphalt surface tennis court, the San Clemente Palace boasts a golf pitch and putt area.
Fun for all ages

Children between 3 and 11 years old are welcome at the Kempinski Kids’ Club every day from 10 am to 6:30 pm. Not far from the pool, the club features a playroom and playground with swings, slide, and seesaw. Activities range from games and Italian lessons to Venetian mask art workshops. Babysitting is also available upon request for a fee.
Breakfast to write home about

Breakfast is served at Insieme Restaurant, Monday through Friday from 7 am until 10:30 am, and weekends until 11 am. It’s the type of meal that even teenagers will find worthy of getting out of bed for. Served buffet style, along with a number of hot dishes, you’ll find local cheese, vegetables from nearby Venetian gardens, cereals and an Asian specialties area with offerings including the likes of dumplings, rice and samosas.
The dessert table is loaded with assorted doughnuts and croissants, more than a half-dozen cakes and tarts and three types of Nutella. Along with the commercial brand, there’s a chunky housemade version with dark chocolate and another with milk chocolate.
When booked in advance, breakfast for two costs $90. (Breakfast is also open to the public and costs $54 per person.)
Pizza, poolside

San Clemente Palace Kempinski is home to a handful of bars and restaurants, ranging from casual to upscale dining. Located next to the pool, La Dolce focuses on pasta and pizza. (Be sure to peek at the wood-fired oven.) Whether you sit inside or out, the attentive staff will ensure you have everything you need.
The Merchant of Venice Spa

Along with four treatment rooms, The Merchant of Venice Spa features a Finnish sauna, steam bath, hair salon and fitness center. Treatments include massages, facials, body scrubs and aromatherapy.

Tucked in between the island’s many historic buildings are numerous gardens, terraces and courtyards. Sculpture art is scattered throughout the grounds. You’ll be given a map at check-in; use it to get your bearings, but then leave it in your room and just wander. You never known what you’ll discover.
